Jets reportedly have doubts about Christian Hackenberg: 'He will never make it' image

The Jets pulled off the biggest upset of the NFL Draft last year when they took struggling quarterback Christian Hackenberg in the second round, and that included the Buccaneers taking kicker Roberto Aguayo in the same round.

Hackenberg plodded along the learning curve this season, failing to play one snap on a team with constant quarterback turmoil. New York played Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith and Bryce Petty — all of which were terrible — but still no Hackenberg.

One New York Daily News source believes he has an explanation.

"He will never make it," the Jets source told the Daily News. "Never."

Though the statement is a bit harsh, it's not hard to believe.

Hackenberg regressed in each of his seasons at Penn State, only really having success when Bill O'Brien was his coach.

Hackenberg is slow in the pocket, has an elongated throwing motion and was not very accurate in college. Those are not traits of a successful NFL quarterback.

RIVERA: You can blame the Jets' coaching staff for another bad year

Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan does, however, like Petty, which is good because he might be the team's starter next season.

"I think Bryce has a lot of potential," Maccagnan said. "When it's all said and done, it's really up to Bryce to determine what player he's going to eventually develop into. But I do think he has the physical ability to potentially develop into a starter."

We would not be surprised to see Brandon Marshall ask for a trade this offseason as his career reaches its final stage.
