Adam Gase thinks his team will be competitive this season.
Gase, who is set to enter his first year as the Jets coach, was asked about his expectations for 2019 when he met with reporters Wednesday.
"I like how they work. I love how meetings went in the spring,” Gase said, via the Jets official website. “I love the attention to detail, I love how our players went out on the field and grinded. I love the way they compete. Those are good attributes to have before we put the pads on.
“We're going to play meaningful games in the end of November and December. That's what we're going to do.”
Gase said he was “excited” for training camp, which is set to begin this week.
"The last couple of days have seemed like forever and everybody’s just ready to get going, get the players in here (and) get our meetings going," Gase said. "There is some good juice going in our building right now. We're ready. We're 0-0 and it's going to be all about how we come together. We all know we're starting at 0-0 and it's time to go to work and see how the chips fall.”
Quarterback Sam Darnold will begin his second season as the Jets’ starter after completing 57.7% of his passes and throwing for 17 touchdowns, along with 15 interceptions, in 13 games as a rookie in 2018.
Darnold said the Jets have a chance to rack up “a lot of wins.”
“I think there's enough talent on this roster to be a playoff contender,” Darnold said. “But again, for us, it’s a one-week-at-a-time mentality. We have to take it like that. If guys are looking too forward in the future, I feel like we could slip up here in the present. I think you definitely have expectations of making it to the playoffs, and we definitely have the talent to do it, but I think the way you get there is focusing one week, really one day at a time.”
The Jets finished 2018 with a 4-12 record and missed the playoffs for an eighth straight season. They fired former coach Todd Bowles in late December and hired Gase to replace him.
