Jerry Jones: Cowboys actively discussing Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper extensions image

Dallas is discussing a pair of important long-term deals this offseason.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday his team is having "active discussions" about extending Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper on 105.3 The Fan.

"Certainly if there are opportunities there that make sense, then we’ll progress," Jones said when asked about his plans for the team. "I think pretty much everybody’s on it pretty good that there’s some pretty active discussions now with Dak and Amari. but it doesn’t mean that some can’t pick up in short order with other players that we have on our roster that we certainly want to keep here in Dallas and have them remain Cowboys in the future.”

Both could prove to be vital pieces for the Cowboys' offensive and team success in 2019.

Dallas drafted Prescott in the fourth round in 2016. He was third on the quarterback depth chart at the start of training camp, but was promoted to become the Cowboys' Week 1 starter after a slew of injuries. He went on to throw for 3,667 yards and a career-high 23 touchdowns while winning the offensive Rookie of the Year award.

The 25-year-old is still on his rookie contract. His four-year deal is set to expire after the 2019-20 season. He is set to receive a little more than $2 million this year.

Cooper, a 2015 first-round pick, recorded 22 receptions for 280 yards in six games for Oakland before he was traded to Dallas in the middle of the season, where he racked up 53 receptions for 725 yards and six touchdowns. He was a driving force behind the Cowboys' midseason turnaround and provided the dynamic deep threat they needed.

He is set to make $13 million in 2019 and will be a free agent after the season, if he does not sign an extension.

Dallas has already signed top pass rusher DeMarcus Lawrence to a five-year, $105 million this offseason. It has also yet to extend Ezekiel Elliott, who led the NFL in rushing yards in 2018.

The Cowboys managed to bounce back from a slow start to finish 10-6 and win the NFC East last season, but the foundation of the team could fall apart if it doesn't find a way to maintain its key playmakers.
