The 49ers have some injury problems at running back, so they brought back preseason favorite Jarryd Hayne.
If you recall, Hayne was the rugby convert who made some big plays during the preseason, but saw limited action during the regular season for San Francisco. He was eventually released by the team before being placed on the practice squad. Now, with Carlos Hyde on injured reserve and Shaun Draughn inactive, the team needs Hayne.

In order to make room for Hayne, the Niners placed offensive lineman Alex Boone on injured reserve with a torn MCL suffered in Week 14. Boone was having a great season for San Francisco, and was named as a Pro Bowl alternate this season.
The 49ers running back committee now consists of Kendall Gaskins, recently acquired DuJuan Harris and now Hayne. San Francisco has had running back woes all year long. The team placed Hyde, Reggie Bush and Mike Davis (short-term) on injured reserve this season. They also signed Pierre Thomas, Travaris Cadet, Gaskins and Harris at different points.

It's not clear which running back will start for San Francisco this week against the Lions. Gaskins and Hayne don't have starting experience, but have been with the team the longest. Harris is a journeyman who has some experience starting, but just joined the team recently after being cut by the Seahawks.
