The Detroit Lions have locked up their guy, with the team agreeing to terms with quarterback Jared Goff on a four-year deal worth $212 million that includes an astounding $170 million guaranteed, according to multiple reports.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Goff's new deal runs through 2027 and includes an option for 2028. The deal also makes him the highest-paid Lions player ever.
As far as where his contract puts him with other quarterbacks, the $53 million annual average ranks second behind only Cincinnati Bengals quarterback, Joe Burrow. Also, the total guaranteed money ranks sixth behind Deshaun Watson, Burrow, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts, according to Over the Cap.
The extension is well-deserved for Goff, who has revived his career and taken the Lions to new heights after being discarded by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2021 offseason.
After a 3-13 campaign in Goff's first year in Detroit, he's helped the Lions to records of 9-8 and 12-5 the past two seasons, with the latter campaign leading to a playoff berth and trip to the NFC Championship Game.
Goff touched on a potential extension last month, saying the two sides had talked about one. Last week, general manager Brad Holmes sounded optimistic that something would get done, so this deal isn't a surprise at all.
