The Detroit Lions managed to secure a 26-20 overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1, and wide receiver Jameson Williams and running back David Montgomery both played a huge part.
Williams had the best game of his career on Sunday, reeling in five catches for 121 yards and one touchdown while also adding one carry for 13 yards. Tabbed as a breakout candidate for 2024, Williams is off to a great start.
On the ground, Montgomery proved to be effective, but he particularly shined on the final drive of the game in overtime, when he ripped over several chunk gains and ultimately won the game with a rushing score. He ended the game with 17 carries for 91 yards and the touchdown and had a catch for two yards.
You probably already know the answer, but are one, both or neither of these players lineup options in fantasy football in Week 2? Let's find out.
Jameson Williams start or sit advice
Jameson Williams: Start
Williams' breakout game came when both wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and tight end Sam LaPorta both had quiet nights.
That isn't going to be the norm, but there's still enough to go around for Williams to thrive most weeks and, as he displayed with his 52-yard touchdown catch, he doesn't need a lot of opportunities to post strong fantasy production.
A matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers seems a bit daunting on paper after the team gave up the fewest fantasy points to wide receivers in Week 1, but the Bucs also drew a matchup with a rookie quarterback in Jayden Daniels, who was making his debut.
Consider Williams a high-end flex option in Week 2.
David Montgomery start or sit advice
David Montgomery: Start
The biggest concern with Montgomery is workload, especially when you consider fellow running back Jahmyr Gibbs is expected to take on a bigger role in 2024, but that was not the case in Week 1.
Montgomery actually had more carries (17-11) and touches than Gibbs (18-15). It probably won't be that way every week after what we saw last season, but the veteran back's touchdown upside can make up for less work.
The Bucs gave up the eighth-most fantasy points to running backs last week, but that was mostly a result of the position's involvement in the passing game, where Montgomery doesn't get many looks.
Tampa was actually stingy against Washington's running backs on the ground, giving up just 50 yards and 3.5 yards per carry. However, the Lions are running behind a much better (and elite) offensive line than what Washington has, and the Bucs will be forced to respect the pass more than they had to with rookie Jayden Daniels under center.
You can confidently deploy Montgomery as a high-end flex option in Week 2.
