James Starks replaces Eddie Lacy as Packers’ top back, Mike McCarthy says image

James Starks has clearly been the Packers’ best option out of the backfield this season, and now he has taken the No. 1 running back role from Eddie Lacy.

"I would say James is our No. 1 back right now going into Detroit," Packers coach McCarthy said Wednesday. "He’s earned that opportunity. But I’m not a big believer in just riding one running back the whole season, so we’ll stay with the 1-2 punch."

Lacy, 25, was expected to be one of the top backs in the NFL this season but has instead been a large disappointment for the Packers and fantasy football owners with only 308 yards and two touchdowns on 83 carries.

Starks, 29, hasn’t exactly set the world on fire, but the eye test and his stats (334 yards on 78 carries) have earned him the top spot in Green Bay.

Lacy’s productivity has likely been hindered by a lingering ankle injury suffered in Week 2, but he has remained the starter much of the season. Now he’ll have the chance to fully heal with Starks handling the bulk of the load for the Packers starting this week against the Lions.
