Before Doug Marrone answered any questions regarding the Jaguars' rookie class, which started the first day of minicamp Friday, he addressed linebacker Telvin Smith's decision to step away from football.

Smith announced Thursday he will not be playing in the 2019 season and will instead use the time to "get my world in order."

Marrone, who said he first heard about the news via social media like everyone else, offered support and expressed concern for the 28-year-old player.

"I'll go ahead and address the situation from yesterday in regards to Telvin Smith and what he tweeted out," Marrone told reporters. "Obviously, I have not spoken to him. You found out the same information that I found out at the same time that I found it out.

"I think that, for me, I kind of put football to the side. To me, that's an afterthought right now in concern with Telvin. I really believe in my heart that Telvin knows that we're here to support him in any which way. Not just myself, the coaches, the organization, his teammates. I'm sure he's aware of that and all we can do is make sure we pray and he knows that is he needs some support, we're here for him."

Marrone noted that he had not yet spoken to Smith's agent, but the team has attempted to contact Smith.

Smith, who did not attend the Jaguars' voluntary offseason workout program, penned a note he posted on Instagram sharing the news.

"It was said to me from a great coach, that in order for the man to be his best, he must get his world in order," Telvin said. "At this time I must take time away from this game & get my world in order. I must give this time back to myself, my family, & my health.

"I appreciate all the support I will & will not get. I just ask y'all respect my decision to not play football this season. I know the rumors of trade talk came about, but I started my career in Jacksonville & the day I do decided to call it quits will be right here in Duval. I love y'all & even in my time off it's #10toesdwn ya feel me!!! Love!"

Smith signed a four-year, $45 million extension in 2017.

In his five seasons with the Jaguars, he has 587 combined tackles with 7.5 sacks and nine interceptions, three of which he returned for touchdowns.
