Indianapolis Colts rookie defensive tackle Jonah Laulu won't be on the initial 53-man roster to begin the season.
Ahead of Tuesday's deadline, the Colts waived the seventh-round pick as a part of the final roster cuts, according to Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star.
While the Oklahoma product will go through waivers, the Colts reportedly want to bring him back to the practice squad if no team makes a claim for him.
It was always going to be a long shot for Laulu to make the roster. The Colts have a deep defensive line room, and there were potentially a max of two spots open among the defensive tackles.
Laulu didn't make much of an impression throughout training camp or the preseason, playing 74 defensive snaps without recording a pressure.
Laulu brings an impressive athletic profile, but he's likely a practice squad candidate where the Colts hope to develop his game further as a three-technique defensive tackle.
