Texans to play remainder of 2015 home games on artificial turf image

The Texans will make the switch to artificial turf for the remainder of its home games since the field isn't "up to the team's standards."

"Our players have always enjoyed playing on natural grass here," general manager Rick Smith told reporters. "But it's our responsibility at the club level as well as the league level to protect them from risk."

During Houston's two home exhibitions and its home opener against the Chiefs on Sunday, the organization said the tray system NRG Stadium has had since 2002 was not working as well as it should.

The quality of the playing surface in Houston has long been a source of frustration for players — including the Texans — and Week 1 brought renewed complaints.

The Texans' next home game is Sept. 27 against the Buccaneers.
