The New York Giants will regret no t making an insurance move at the kicker position in Week 2.
After Graham Gano was added to the injury report Saturday afternoon, the Giants opted to elevate two linebackers from the practice squad instead of undrafted rookie Jude McAtamney.
The decision to not elevate McAtamney immediately came back to hurt the Giants.
On the opening kickoff, Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler ran back the kick for a touchdown. Though it was called back due to a penalty, Gano injured his hamstring running down the sideline in pursuit of Ekeler.
Graham Gano injury update
Gano was listed as doubtful to return during the first quarter pretty quickly after suffering the injury on the opening kickoff.
With Gano out, the Giants will lean on punter Jaime Gillan to perform the kicking duties.
Gano was the source of the Giants offense in Week 1, knocking in both of his field-goal attempts from 23 and 50 yards, respectively, in the 28-6 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
It's unclear how long Gano will be out, but the decision to not elevate McAtamney will and should be heavily scrutinized.
