New York Giants rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. was carted off the field due to a potentially major injury during Tuesday's practice.

The injury was non-contact and occurred during a kickoff return drill.

According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Tracy "muffed a kickoff and his right ankle/lower leg appeared to buckle as he reached for the ball. They immediately put an air cast on his right leg and carted him off."

The Giants released a statement, following Tuesday's practice specifying the injury was to Tracy's ankle and that the rookie was sent to the hospital for further evaluation.

"RB Tyrone Tracy sustained an ankle injury and will be undergoing further imaging at HSS for a more comprehensive evaluation.”

It's never a good sign when the air cast comes out, which means this could be a potential season-ending injury.

Tracy, the team's fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was right in the middle of the competition for the backup running back role behind starter Devin Singletary.

Tracy had been receiving first-team reps throughout training camp. During the preseason opener, Tracy took five carries for 26 rushing yards while playing mostly with the second-team offense.

If Tracy is to miss a significant amount of time, the Giants are likely to lean on second-year back Eric Gray and undrafted free-agent rookie Dante Miller.
