Giants' Daniel Jones 'might' take first-team snaps at camp, Pat Shurmur says image

There's no telling whether Daniel Jones will take first-team snaps for New York at training camp but coach Pat Shurmur isn't ruling out the possibility.

Shurmur said Tuesday that Jones getting reps with the starters "might happen" but gave no indication about when it could.

"We have a plan for how this is all going to play out," Shurmur told ESPN. "Just let it unfold for you."

Jones was selected with the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL draft after three years starting at Duke. He had an impressive college career, but many were caught off guard by how early he was off the board. Some believe he won't be ready to step in for a declining Eli Manning if his number is called this year.

Manning, 38, threw for 4,299 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2018-19. He led the Giants to an underwhelming 5-11 finish in his 15th NFL season. They finished dead last in the NFC East and missed the playoffs. There was speculation that he should've been benched last season, and that's sure to pick back up if New York isn't successful in 2019-20.

But the two-time Super Bowl MVP has maintained his starting spot for the time being.

There are doubts Jones has the game-changing ability to turn around a team that traded an elite weapon in Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns in March. But 2018 Rookie of the Year Saquon Barkley has made it a point to support Jones, claiming doubters should "wait till he wins two Super Bowls."

Whether Jones can earn a spot among the first-string players before the regular season remains to be seen.
