New England Patriots vs New York Jets betting guide
Opening line: Patriots -10/ 42.5
Sam Darnold turn the Jets' offense around
The Jets went into their game last week with the Cowboys winless. Starting quarterback Sam Darnold had only played the first week of the season due to an illness, and Trevor Siemian and Luke Falk were forced to take over. Siemian made it for one half until he had a season ending injury, and Falk was not prepared for the job. He did the best he could in weeks 2-4, but the fact remained that the New York Jets were 0-4 on the year.
Enter back in Darnold. The illness had finally passed, and Darnold went into last week’s game against the Cowboys still searching for the Jets’ first win. The Cowboys came into the game with a winning record, and one of the five best offenses in football. The Jets' defense had been just outside the top 10 all season long, so that wasn’t their problem. They did enough to slow the Cowboys' offense down, but it was up to Darnold to go out and win the game. Win the game he did, throwing for 338 yards and two touchdowns to remind Jets fans what it was like to have an actual quarterback again.
New season, same Patriots?
The Patriots picked up the 2019 season where they left off — winning. They have not tasted defeat yet this season, and it’s thanks to the best defense in the NFL. It is not a stretch to say this is the best defense Tom Brady has had since Ty Law and Rodney Harrison were on the team a decade ago.
Football Outsider’s analytic team has had this defense ranked first in DVOA since Week 2. They shut down the Jets earlier in the season, holding the offense to zero points, but this time they will face a tougher challenge. We might not know if Sam Darnold is a franchise quarterback yet, but we know he is better than Luke Falk.
Patriots vs. Jets prediction
With the best defense in football on the field this weekend, you would think this game would be a stone cold under on our NFL picks selection, but I’m not so sure.
In the first meeting these two teams found a way to get the overs total without the Jets scoring an offensive touchdown. I expect the Patriots to do what they do, and put up their 27-31 points like they do most weeks. In the first meeting they hung 30 points on the Jets defense, and there is no reason to think why they couldn’t do that again. The difference to me is Sam Darnold. Is he good enough to beat this Patriots team?
MNF pick: Patriots vs. Jets over 43.5 (-110)
