Just one month after signing with the Dallas Cowboys in free agency, former Raiders cornerback and draft pick Gareon Conley has decided to retire from the NFL.
According to ESPN's Todd Archer, Conley notified the team that he has decided to hang up his cleats, which led to the team releasing him on Sunday. The veteran cornerback inked a one-year deal with the Cowboys in June.
Conley was originally a first-round pick of the Raiders in 2017 and spent two-plus years with the team before he was traded to the Houston Texans in 2019, the last season in which he played a snap in the NFL.
Conley spent the entire 2020 campaign on injured reserve and hasn't played a snap in the NFL since. The Ohio State product spent some time in the UFL after that before resurfacing with the Cowboys in June.
What makes this situation even more wild is the fact that the Raiders recently had a former Cowboy abruptly retire from the NFL in wide receiver Michael Gallup, who inked a one-year deal in April.
That said, Conley's retirement is far less surprising given the fact that he was out of the game as long as he was. General manager Tom Telesco said last week that even he was surprised of Gallup's decision.
