The United Football League has concluded its 2024 campaign after the championship game took place on Sunday, and a pair of former Detroit Lions players earned some hardware in the process.
The Birmingham Stallions took care of business in the UFL Championship Game on Sunday, with the team handily beating the San Antonio Brahmas, 25-0. The game's Most Valuable Player, quarterback Adrian Martinez, had a cup of coffee with the Lions in 2023.
But he wasn't the only former Lions player to earn a title. Former Detroit cornerback Mark Gilbert was also on Birmingham. Gilbert was signed off the Pittsburgh Steelers' practice squad in 2021 by the Lions and appeared in eight games, tallying three tackles, one pass defensed and one forced fumble.
Martinez was the real star of the show, though. Not only did he win the championship MVP, he was also the regular season MVP and was voted to the All-UFL Team. It'll be interesting to see if that earns him another shot in the NFL.
UFL standouts have already begun signing with teams. The Lions have gotten in on the action, with the team signing kicker Jake Bates, who will now compete against veteran Michael Badgley after Detroit surprisingly released UDFA James Turner.
