Just days after the Detroit Lions waived undrafted free-agent kicker James Turner in favor of recently signed kicker Jake Bates, the Michigan product has found a new home.
According to the league's transactions wire, Turner has been claimed off waivers by the Green Bay Packers, a team that was also in the running for the aforementioned Bates.
The Lions waiving Turner was at least a bit of a surprise considering he seemed to be giving veteran Michael Badgley a run for his money.
The UDFA kicker topped Badgley on at least two occasions during open practice this offseason and flashed a powerful leg, something the Lions are looking for. He figured to remain in the running for the starting job going into training camp.
However, the part of practice not seen by the media must have been a different story for Turner. Whatever the case may be, he'll get an opportunity to grab a starting role in Green Bay in a competition against Anders Carlson.
