"I will never stop pushing for the League to accept medical cannabis as a viable option for pain management," Monroe wrote. "I will do everything I can to ensure the generations of NFL players after me won't have to resort to harmful and addictive opiods as their only option for pain management."

Monroe has been plagued by injuries and hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2012 as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who selected him with the eighth overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.
In May, Monroe became the first active player to openly lobby for the use of medical marijuana to combat pain from injuries.
