In this Week 1 matchup, the Eagles and Falcons are both hoping to start off their season stronger than last year.
Both teams ended last in their respective divisions last year, with the Falcons going 4-12 in the NFC South, and the Eagles going 4-11-1 in the NFC East.
These two teams haven’t met since 2019, when the Falcons won 24-20 over the Eagles in their Week 2 game. As the host, the Falcons are projected to win this year’s game as well, with ESPN giving them a 63 percent chance of starting out 1-0. Many NFL experts are predicting a close game.
On the Falcons' side, new receivers Kyle Pitts and Calvin Ridley will be tested after losing Julio Jones this season. Pitts is the Falcons' rookie tight end and only played for two snaps during the preseason, so he still has a lot to prove as he starts in his first NFL game. Ridley had a total of 1,374 receiving yards last season and expectations are high with his newfound WR1 status.
In his 14th season, Matt Ryan ranked as the No. 11 quarterback this season based on The Athletic’s list voted by coaches and evaluators. With 27 new players on their roster, Ryan will have to adjust to some changes on the offensive side.
On the other hand, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was ranked No. 30 on The Athletic’s list. His 52 percent completion rate from last season didn’t help with his ranking. This is his first season as the Eagles’ starter after Carson Wentz was traded this offseason. Hurts only started four games last season, so this year will be his chance to develop his skills during this rebuilding year.
