Josh McCown had one condition when he signed a one-year contract with the Eagles earlier this month: the team had to be willing to work with his coaching schedule.
That's right — the journeyman quarterback had planned to spend his fall coaching high school football at Myers Park in Charlotte, N.C., before deciding to come out of retirement.
But the Eagles "understand the family dynamic," as McCown put it, and will allow McCown to fly to Charlotte each Friday after practice so he can coach at Myers Park High School. He'll then fly back to Philadelphia that night or the next morning to resume his backup duties with the Eagles.
"The proximity to Charlotte was a factor, and part of why it made sense to sign here," McCown told NJ.com, who noted his family also lives there.
McCown announced his retirement in June and was quickly hired by ESPN to serve as an NFL analyst. He's set to rejoin the network after the 2019 season.
He'll enter his 17th season in the league with his eighth different team since being drafted in the third round in 2002. McCown last played for the Jets for two seasons, going 5-11 as the starter with 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
Throughout his career, McCown has completed 60.2 percent of his passes for 17,707 yards and 98 touchdowns with 82 interceptions in 99 games (76 starts). According to Spotrac, he’s made just shy of $50 million in his 16 seasons.
