The Detroit Lions had their first serious injury of training camp on Tuesday when defensive lineman John Cominsky got hurt and had to be carted off the field in practice.
And, unfortunately, the news is not good. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the veteran lineman suffered a torn MCL and is expected to be out indefinitely. He adds Cominsky could possibly be back for the playoffs.
Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Cominsky will have surgery, as expected, and the belief is that he will miss five to six months which, again, leaves the door open for him to return for the playoffs.
This is just brutal news for Cominsky, who took a pay cut earlier this offseason. The Lions already had shaky depth along the edge and his injury won't help. It only further reinforces Detroit's need for more help at the position.
Cominsky has spent the past two seasons with the Lions, tallying six sacks over 30 games (19 starts) in that span. Prior to his stint in Motown, Cominsky spent three seasons with the Falcons, appearing in 27 games (one start) and totaling 1.5 sacks.
Cominsky is in the final year of his deal and is slated to hit free agency in 2025.
