Thanks to Kent Lee Platte, the creator of Relative Athletic Score (RAS), we have a good idea about how athletic the Detroit Lions' current offseason roster is, and how the group compares to the rest of the NFL.
According to Platte, who uses measurements and combine results to determine how athletic a player is, the Lions' offseason roster has an average RAS of 7.5 out of 10, which ranks 12th in the NFL.
Platte notes that the Lions' roster has been getting more and more athletic since 2020. Here's a look at what else he had to say about Detroit:
The overall athleticism of the Lions roster has been growing by pretty big leaps since 2020. They went from a very low ranked 6.56 in 2019 to 6.7 in 2021, 6.92, 7.29, and now 7.5. Nearly a full point jump on average and they're still improving.
General manager Brad Holmes helped that score by bringing in a very athletic draft class. Ennis Rakestraw Jr. has the lowest RAS at 6.17, followed by Sione Vaki, who sports a very respectable 7.93.
But Terrion Arnold (9.27), Giovanni Manu (8.83), Mekhi Wingo (8.78) and Christian Mahogany (9.63) are all over eight, and Arnold and Mahogany sport elite marks over nine — as if we needed another reason to love this draft class.
Holmes has had a clear emphasis on getting this roster more athletic, and he's been able to achieve that in spades over the last few years.
