The Detroit Lions made the four-year, $212 million contract extension with quarterback Jared Goff official on Thursday and the signal-caller also met with the media to discuss the record-setting deal.
Goff's four-year extension broke the NFL record for the largest signing bonus ($73 million) and first-year cash ($80.3 million). Goff falls just short of the record for money over three years (153.6 million), according to former NFL exec Andrew Brandt.
One thing we didn't know about the Goff deal is the fact that it has a no-trade clause in it, something he revealed during his press conference.
“It was mostly security,” Goff said. “I think you can go back and forth on the numbers and whatnot, but that wasn’t really the thing that was something that I was ever extremely concerned with. (It was) the security and the no-trade clause.”
Of course, Goff ended up in Detroit in the first place because he was traded by the Los Angeles Rams. Now, the veteran signal-caller won't have to worry about that happening here.
“This city means so much to me now and it will hold a special place in my heart forever,” he said. “I just want to win for them. I want to win for these fans.”
The extension for Goff is well-deserved, as he's helped pull the Lions out of the doldrums over the past three years and Detroit now sits as one of the best teams in the NFL.
All that's left is for Goff to get that elusive Super Bowl for the franchise and he'll be a legend in Motown forever.
