Ahead of his third season, the Detroit Lions are hoping to get more out of Jameson Williams, who has had a rocky start to his career after being taken with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Williams had to work his way back from an ACL tear suffered in college during his rookie campaign, and then a gambling suspension forced him to miss the first four games of last season.
The 2024 campaign will be the first in which he'll have both a normal offseason and start to the season, and Detroit will hope that translates to him stepping up, which is especially needed after the departure of Josh Reynolds.
Kay Adams takes all of that into account and believes it will lead to the Alabama product having a breakout season. Here are her thoughts:
"I have my eye on Jameson Williams," Adams said. "His first two years in the league haven't been ideal. He battled back from an ACL injury his rookie year, had some off-the-field stuff that earned him a four-game suspension last season. Not great, but the last time we saw Jameson on the field, he was cutting up the Niners' defense in the NFC Championship Game."
Adams also went on to cite how Lions head coach Dan Campbell had great things to say about Williams during organized team activities, in which he called the wideout Detroit's most improved player.
“He’s a man on a mission. I'm just going to leave it at that,” Campbell said, before noting that Williams has improved "everywhere."
"I think I've matured a lot," Williams said. "Coming in the league, I still had some childish ways. Wanted to do what I wanted to do, and how I wanted to do it. Sometimes you got to listen, and just be on the right track. Follow the right path, and you'll be down the right way."
We recently cited Williams as one of the Lions' biggest X-factors going into the 2024 campaign. In reality, if he can just match what Reynolds did in 2023, that would be enough.
However, he's capable of more than that and if he can realize his full potential, Detroit's offense might go to another level this coming season.
