Leave it to Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell to reference the movie "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" when talking about the team's approach to its defensive scheme.
The movie's main character, Ron Burgundy, who is played by actor Will Ferrell, reads anything and everything that's on the teleprompter in front of him, no matter what it says. So, what does that have to do with the Lions' defensive scheme?
Campbell stated that the Lions need to be flexible when it comes to how they run their defense and can't simply "read off the teleprompter," so to speak.
"We can't just do the Ron Burgundy," Campbell said, according to The Athletic's Colton Pouncy. "We can't just read off the teleprompter."
When it comes to flexibility in their defense, the Lions are going to have plenty of it in 2024, partly thanks to the versatility in the secondary.
But having flexibility is more than just about personnel. Teams must be able to adjust on the fly based on their opponent and how things are going in any particular game.
That will be on defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who should have a more talented unit to work with this coming season, both upfront and on the back end.
