The time for the Detroit Lions to cut their roster down to 53 players is finally upon us after the team completed its 2024 preseason schedule on Saturday with a 24-17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers at Ford Field.
The deadline to trim the roster down from its 90-man offseason version to the 53-man limit for the regular season falls on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 4 p.m. ET, but the Lions have already begun parting ways with players before then.
As head coach Dan Campbell noted last week, Detroit is in a very different situation than the team was when he first took over in 2021 when things weren't as certain because the Lions didn't have anywhere near the talent they have now.
"So now, here we are, you feel like you’ve tied down most of these spots," Campbell said last week. "We’re gonna have to let go of some good players I think, ultimately, that I think can play in this league at some point at different positions. That’s a hard thing to do. But it also shows where our roster is at to this point. It’s grown a ton. Brad’s done a hell of a job.”
Despite having more certainty, the Lions still have some tough decisions to make at multiple positions on both sides of the ball. As they whittle their roster down over the next few days, you can follow along with our tracker below, which will be updated after every move.
