News of Johnson's decision comes one day after former teammate and running back Jamaal Charles signed a one-day deal to retire with the Chiefs.
Johnson, 36, was selected out of Texas with the No. 15 overall pick in 2005. He played a key role on the Chiefs' defense but tore his Achilles in Week 14 of the 2016 season after tallying 90 tackles, one sack and one interception in 13 games. After 13 years in Kansas City, he was cut in March 2018.
The All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowl selection then signed with the Raiders, but appeared in just six games before being released by Oakland.
Johnson had 27 1/2 sacks and 14 interceptions over his 14-year career. He finishes his career as the Chiefs' all-time leader in tackles (1,262).
