Things they are a-changin' in Denver.

Nathaniel Hackett didn't last a season as the Broncos' head coach, so they brought in a man who has a little bit of experience managing high-level quarterback play: Sean Payton, the offensive mastermind who helmed the Saints during Drew Brees' tenure there.

The Broncos are going to need the support. The offensive line gave up the most sacks in the league at 63, and Russell Wilson seemed to be more of a liability to the Broncos offense than a boon for long stretches of season after Denver gave up a king's random to land him.

Part of that ransom was what turned out to be the No. 5 overall pick, which went to the Seahawks. The draft is sparse for the Broncos this year, so they're going to have to capitalize on the capital they have to try to get better.

Broncos NFL Draft needs

  • Cornerback: Two is better than one, and Pat Surtain can't cover six players. Damarri Mathis has had his ups and downs, and the Broncos don't have many options in the slot. This is a team that generally does well in finding defensive backs. It may have to do so again.
  • Edge: The two best corners on the planet don't matter if they have to cover for six seconds on every play. The Broncos need to add an edge rusher to get pressure on the quarterback, after finishing in the bottom half of the league with 36 sacks last year.
  • Center: The Broncos addressed some of their offensive line issues in the offseason, having signed Mike McGlinchey and Ben Powers, but center is still a dire need. Lloyd Cushenberry has dealt with injuries, and the Broncos will likely want a player with a higher ceiling.
