How Cardinals star DeAndre Hopkins earned his nickname 'Nuk' image

No, DeAndre Hopkins didn't get his nickname for any bomb-related reasons, despite its pronunciation.

The Cardinals star receiver, known to some as "Nuk," was given that nickname for much more pleasant reasons: He only liked one brand of pacifier when he was a baby. Already a four-time Pro Bowler, the first-year Arizona wideout occasionally is called Nuk on broadcasts rather than by his full name. He probably doesn't mind, given that it was a nickname granted by his mother and given that it's been there throughout a dominant career on the outside in both Houston and now with the Cardinals.

Here's more to know about the origins behind Hopkins' nickname.

Why is DeAndre Hopkins nicknamed Nuk?

Hopkins earned the "Nuk" nickname when he was very young. His mother bestowed the moniker on Hopkins because he would only use one brand of pacifiers: NUK.

It's not clear what exactly about a pacifier would be objectionable to a baby, but apparently Hopkins was very picky. A quick look through modern pacifier brands shows that a worse nickname could've definitely come out of such a preference — how would we view Hopkins if his nickname was MAM, WubbaNub or Playtex?

How do you pronounce DeAndre Hopkins' nickname?

You pronounce Nuk the same way you would pronounce "nuke" when referring to a nuclear bomb. Hopkins used to embrace that pronunciation in his Twitter handle, which was @NukDaBomb for a time before Hopkins changed to the more professional @DeAndreHopkins.

It's certainly a more intriguing nickname pronunciation than if Nuk was said as if it rhymed with "yuck."
