With former Green Bay Packers Super Bowl-winning quarterback Aaron Rodgers set to be released by the New York Jets, another former Packers star by the name of Davante Adams could also soon be leaving the Jets.
New Jets head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey may want to clean house and scale back a bit, and as a result, there have been rumors that perhaps Adams could be headed back to Green Bay.
However, there could be one problem getting in the way of the six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver relocating to his old stomping grounds.
He has two seasons remaining on his contract, and there is no guaranteed money left on it. The 32-year-old will likely want a new deal, and it could cost the Packers a lot of dough.
In a recent article, ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell estimated that a new deal for Adams could set his team back anywhere from $26.1 million to $32 million a year (h/t FanSided's Lombardi Ave). That would be a ton of money to pay someone as he heads into his mid-30s.
"Adams is still a useful player," Barnwell wrote earlier this month. "He's just not worth nearly $36 million per season, and that's going to bring an end to his time with the Jets, given that the primary reason they dragged Adams to New York will be hitting the road."
Just a year ago, it looked like the Packers had all the wide receiver threats they needed in-house, and that Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks, Romeo Doubs and Jayden Reed simply needed time to develop. But none of them took a step forward in 2024, and it is unknown how much Watson will be able to play in 2025 after he tore his ACL in Week 18.
Adams caught 85 passes and put up 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns this season, so on the surface, he would seem to be the proven wide receiver threat the Packers need to take the next step forward. But his production has declined over the last couple of years, and it simply isn't wise to pay a player top dollar while he's in decline.
