Packers wide receiver Davante Adams gave some optimism that he could return to the field soon as he said he'll be a "game-time decision" for Sunday's matchup against the Chiefs.
“After that, I’ll be feeling more confident next week and I’ll get closer and closer," Adams said Thursday (via The Athletic). "It’s not a game I’m playing with y’all. I just generally don’t know."
Adams went on to say that his toe feels "two million" times better than when he was injured in the fourth quarter of the Packers' Week 4 loss to the Eagles. He watched the end of the game from the sideline in what he described as "a little bit of pain." He has missed the three games since with turf toe.
“I’m a little limited right now, but for the most part I can do a lot of different footwork stuff,” Adams said. “It’s just the full-speed routes right now that are a little tougher for me. So I’m trying to fight through that, but I’m in a really good spot right now. It’s just about getting the OK from the doctors at this point … making sure we’re being smart so I don’t get back out there and reaggravate it.”
The Athletic notes Adams warmed up with the team Wednesday and Thursday for the first time since his injury, which included high skips, shuffles, jogging and stretching. He then went in the team's indoor practice facility for rehab.
Adams said the most challenging part of the rehab process has been pushing off on his right foot.
“When you tear the ligament,” he said, “it’s not about toughing it out. Your toe doesn’t respond the same way. If you push off and it bites or you have sharp pain, you can’t really fight through that type of feeling, so just trying to do what I can day by day to get right back and try to get it back as close to how it was before.”
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers said the team isn't going to rush Adams back before he's ready.
"Excited to get him back, but I want him to be healthy first and foremost, and that's a tough injury to deal with," Rodgers said (per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). "You've seen other top receivers who've had similar injuries and it nags them for most of the season. I'd love for him to be as healthy as possible before he comes back."
Adams, selected in the second round of the 2014 draft, was Rodgers' top target before the injury with 25 receptions for 378 yards through the first four games this season.
The Packers (6-1) travel to Kansas City to face the Chiefs (5-2) with kickoff set for 8:20 p.m. ET Sunday.
