Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott has been tearing it up in the preseason, providing hope for fans in Dallas towards the future. That future was rushed though when starting QB Tony Romo broke a bone in his back, which has him projected to miss about half of the upcoming season.
Romo has been the face of Dallas for about a decade now, but perhaps it's time for a change. Prescott has a lot of promise, and quotes from Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones to MMQB indicate just how much the team likes him.
The Cowboys tried desperately to move up in the first round to select Paxton Lynch (who went to Denver), but ultimately couldn't. Now? They wouldn't even trade Prescott for Lynch straight up. "That’s how much they like Dak right now," Jones says of his coaches and front office.
So what happens when Romo returns? In all likelihood the team returns to the 36-year-old veteran, but Jones isn't ruling anything out.

“I can’t imagine a scenario where Tony’s not our quarterback when he’s ready,” Jones said. “But things happen. You know that. You know what happened to Bledsoe and Brady. I’m sure Tony’s aware of that. But the reality is, Tony’s going to come back for us and play great, we believe."

Jones referenced the time Tom Brady replaced Drew Bledsoe in 2001 and led the Patriots to a Super Bowl victory. At the time there was no way New England could see what was coming, after all, they signed Bledsoe to a then-record 10-year, $103 million contract in March of that year.
It's too early to determine if Prescott will follow Brady's story, but if he looks good to start the season, then expect the Cowboys to give him the opportunity to finish it out.
