Dak Prescott contract: Jerry Jones clarifies 'imminent' comment, says QB may have different opinion image

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones explained what his "imminent" comment meant when it comes to Dak Prescott's contract negotiations, saying the quarterback might have a different opinion on how close the two sides are on reaching a new deal.

Jones said after Sunday's 35-17 win over the Giants that he thought Prescott's extension would be "done on a imminent basis." Dallas executive vice president Stephen Jones, however, said the two will reach an agreement "in due time," adding someone should ask the elder Jones to clarify what he meant by "imminent" because he "has different meanings for different words," according to Pro Football Talk.

The owner clarified his comments Tuesday during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan

"(Imminent) means ready to take place, close, near, about to happen — those types of things," Jones said (via CBS Sports). "As I've said so many times, nothing happens until both parties decide that what they're seeing and it's time to go. Nothing ever.

"I was asked my opinion. I think that we are fast approaching an agreement. Then that's relative maybe to where we've been. On the other hand, that might be my opinion."

Jones went on to explain that his opinion may be different than how the quarterback thinks negotiations are going.

"It sure might not be Dak's opinion," Jones added. "When Dak expresses his opinion or his agent expresses their opinion, that may be different than my opinion. And, so, that can go on for a long time. So, when somebody asks your opinion on whether something's done that takes two to do it, they're speaking just from their perspective, and in my mind we were fast approaching a deal."

The Cowboys were optimistic they would be able to reach a new deal before Week 1, but that didn't happen. Prescott said after Sunday's game he's focused on playing the game rather than his contract talks.

“I’m turning the page and I’m worried about the Washington Redskins,” Prescott said (per NFL.com), referring to Dallas' Week 2 opponent. “I have people that handle that. My focus is on this team, on the football game. I think as long as I can keep continuing to do that, this will do things like we did tonight. As I said, that’s been out of my focus for the past week, and I told you guys that.”
