Jameill Showers had 62 pass attempts for the Cowboys in preseason, and made it to the practice squad as a quarterback. He's been called up to the active roster now, but he won't be Dak Prescott's backup.

Showers will instead be a safety, which seems odd on the surface. But when you realize he spent all of last season on the team's practice squad, playing on special teams, you realize that there's a method to Dallas' madness.

Even though Showers covered punts and kicks as a scout team player last year, and recorded five tackles in the 2015 preseason, it's still an interesting move by Dallas. After all, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said before the season, "We feel and believe, and Jameill does as well, that quarterback is the position for him."

Essentially, the belief was Showers was done with special teams duties, but that's clearly not the case. We doubt Showers cares too much, though. He is now part of the 53-man roster as an undrafted free agent, and that's an accomplishment.

UPDATE Oct. 7, 2:28 p.m. EST:

Well, according to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Showers won't be seeing game action on Sundays, at least not yet. Bummer.
