The Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys find themselves heading into Sunday’s game in very different places. The Falcons beat the New Orleans Saints last week to get to 4-4 on the season -- just a game out of the NFC Wild Card race after a rocky start to the season. The Cowboys, meanwhile, are coming off of a surprising loss to the Denver Broncos in what was easily Dak Prescott’s worst game of the season. They are, however, still 6-2. There’s no panic in Dallas yet.
Perhaps the most impressive part of the Falcons’ turnaround has been Matt Ryan. While he still has baffling interceptions at times, Ryan has been solid in three of his last four games, with the outlier being an abysmal performance against the Carolina Panthers. Against the Saints, Ryan threw for 343 yards, a pair of touchdowns, and no picks. Cordarrelle Patterson also has put together a strong season for the Falcons, continuing Arthur Smith’s strong pedigree with running backs (although when one of those running backs is Derrick Henry it’s wise not to give too much credit to coaching).
For the Cowboys, Sunday was a humbling loss after their primetime win over the Minnesota Vikings put buzz at a season high. Nearly the entire top brass of the NFC suffered losses on Sunday, so it didn’t hurt them in the standings, but the Falcons are no longer a get right game for NFC teams. The Cowboys will have to put their best foot forward if they’re going to bounce back Sunday.
Atlanta is firmly middle of the road against both the run and pass on defense, so the Cowboys will have to find balance if they’re going to win. The Cowboys are in the same situation defensively, so this game could come down to whichever defense is able to make a big play at a key moment.
