Cowboys coaching rumors: Mike McCarthy, Marvin Lewis to meet with Dallas; Jason Garrett's status still in limbo image

Add another layer of intrigue (or confusion) to the Cowboys' coaching drama.

According to reports by Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter, respectively, Dallas is meeting former Packers coach Mike McCarthy and former Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, all why incumbent Jason Garrett's status remains in limbo.

MORE: Will Cowboys fire Jason Garrett?

Lewis was fired by Cincinnati in December 2018 after 16 seasons in which he went 131-122 and 0-7 in playoff games. McCarthy was fired by Green Bay in December 2018 as well. His dismissal from the team — which he coached to a 125-77-2 record — was not without controversy, prompting him to say, "It couldn't have been handled any worse." His Packers teams made the playoffs in nine of his 12 seasons, four times making the NFC championship game and once winning the Super Bowl.

The Cowboys are quickly approaching a similar status in their coaching debacle. ESPN reported on Friday that the organization would "move on without" Garrett as its head coach, though the team quickly refuted that by saying there was "no official news" on his job status.

The Cowboys entered Week 17 of the season with an outside chance of making the playoffs as a wild card in the NFC, but needed both a victory over the Redskins and a loss by division rival Philadelphia. The Cowboys beat Washington 47-16 to close the season at 8-8, but a 34-17 Eagles win over the Giants netted them the final playoff spot, leaving Dallas out in the cold.

That was the latest setback of Garrett's tenure, which has seen him coach the Cowboys to an 85-67 record since taking over midway through the 2010 season.
