As NFL teams trim the rosters down to 53 players ahead of Tuesday's deadline, the Indianapolis Colts will have their eyes glued to the waiver wire.
Even though the majority of roster spots are likely locked up for the Colts, general manager Chris Ballard has used the waiver wire to add some depth to positions of need in almost every season during his tenure.
The Colts have until Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET to trim the roster down to 53 players. Then, they will have until noon the following day to make any waiver claims from the No. 15 spot.
Surprisingly, one NFL analyst believes the Colts are among the landing spots for embattled first-round pick and Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney, according to Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report.
"Figuring out who Toney could help is difficult. On one hand, he's electric with the ball in his hands and has put together some good games while in the league. On the other, where does someone go when they can't succeed on the Kansas City Chiefs?" Ballentine wrote. "Shane Steichen is a good offensive mind on a team that needs to have someone to backup Josh Downs."
It would be a complete surprise if the Colts had any shred of interest in Toney. Not only does he fail to meet the standard they hold in the locker room, there's not really a spot for him in the offense.
With respect to Ballentine, the Colts already know who their backup is to Downs. They've put rookie Adonai Mitchell in the slot, and they also have Anthony Gould prepared to work in Downs' place if need be.
Toney has proven that despite his immense upside as a ball carrier, he provides far more headaches than he does solutions both on and off the field.
Toney should have never been a first-round pick to begin with and if he's struggling to hold onto a roster spot with the Chiefs, there's likely a good reason for that.
