The Colts aren't playing well, and a lot of the blame has deservingly been placed on the defensive side of the ball.
Indianapolis has allowed the eighth-most yards per game in the league, and the third-most points. Clearly the defense could use some work, and general manager Ryan Grigson is well aware. Speaking on the Jay Mohr show Thursday, Grigson said Andrew Luck's six-year, $140 million contract has prevented the team from spending money elsewhere.
"We have a defense that is a work in progress," Grigson said. "And when you have to tighten up, once you have to pay Andrew what we did, it's going to take some time to build on the other side of the ball.

"We've got a lot of players on that side of the ball that are on the come, but nothing's ever perfect. There are no utopias on an NFL team."
Grigson mentioned Clayton Geathers, T.J. Green and Henry Anderson as defensive players who are progressing, but still believes it's going to take time for the defense to catch up to the offense. He felt like the players on offense were "definitely going in the right direction," although he says the offensive line could use a little more work.
Overall, Grigson was candid in discussing his team. He admitted "we have missed on picks" and that he has to do better, but added, "we've never come out and said it's Super Bowl or bust this year." He still views this team as a work in progress.

"We have a lot of things to be proud of, but at the same time we're one and three," Grigson said. "The expectations around Indianapolis [are] always going to be high because of the success that we've had."
The Colts have been a fixture in the playoffs, so fans really aren't used to 1-3 starts. They expect to get to the playoffs, especially with a quarterback the caliber of Luck.
