The Cincinnati Bengals finished their 2024 preseason slate on Thursday night with a loss to the Indianapolis Colts, and now the team will turn its attention to cutting its offseason roster down to 53 players.
The deadline for teams to formulate their initial 53-man rosters falls on Tuesday, Aug. 27, but teams will begin making roster moves before then. In fact, the Bengals began making theirs the day after their final preseason game.
Unlike the last couple of years, the league is not requiring teams to make gradual roster cuts after each preseason game and instead there is just one cutdown deadline.
Vested veterans (four accrued seasons in the NFL) who are cut qualify as a release and are able to sign with a team immediately, but non-vested players are subject to waivers before becoming free agents.
In years past, players who landed on injured reserve before final cuts were made were not eligible to come back later in the season unless they signed an injury settlement to be removed from the list.
This year, teams are allowed to designate up to two players to return from injured reserve if they are placed on the list ahead of final cuts instead of the team having to carry those players on the initial 53-man roster before then placing them on IR. Players who land on injured reserve have to miss a minimum of four games.
Players who are on the active/NFI or active/PUP lists during training camp and the preseason can be moved to the reserve/NFI or reserve/PUP lists and at final cuts and not count toward the 53-man limit, but they must miss at least the first four games, also.
