Instead of trotting out Colin Kaepernick for the first series of Sunday’s game against the Bills with no warning, 49ers coach Chip Kelly made the announcement earlier this week that Kaepernick would start.
Some questioned why Kelly didn’t keep this move a secret. We’ll let him explain.
WEEK 6 PICKS: Straight up | Against the spread
“We live in a society where there are no secrets,” Kelly said Thursday (via CSN Bay Area). “So if Colin took all the reps with the ones Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, somebody’s ‘mole’ would tell you who’s taking all the reps.
“And I don’t really care. We have two similar quarterbacks. Our offense doesn’t change. I don’t think you’re going to outsmart people in the National Football League, where all of a sudden, the second quarterback is playing, Rex (Ryan) is going to tear up his game plan and say, ‘We’re screwed. We have no idea how to defend them.’”
Fair enough.
STEELE: With Kaepernick starting, karma wins again
Bills coach Rex Ryan made comments in a Wednesday conference call that had a similar message.
“It’s (Kelly’s) offense, that’s what you’re trying to prepare for,” Ryan said. “All the quarterbacks have mobility. It really doesn’t change much, recognizing that obviously Kaepernick is a tremendous runner.”
Sunday will be Kaepernick’s first start since Nov. 1 of last year, a 27-6 loss to the Rams.
