For just the second time in his career, Patrick Mahomes will play a wild-card game.
The defending Super Bowl champs endured a frustrating up-and-down season before eventually settling into the AFC's No. 3 seed. Kansas City, which rested most of its starters in Week 18 after being locked into their playoff position regardless of the outcome, slumped into the playoffs, closing the year just 4-5 after starting the season 6-1.
At the heart of KC's struggles is a receiving group that leads the NFL in drops, a pattern that emerged back in Week 1 in a loss to the Lions. Between a drop on a game-winning touchdown against the Eagles and a called-back game-winning touchdown against the Bills due to a penalty, the much-maligned receivers have made noise for all the wrong reasons.
Yet, neither that nor a struggling offensive line and subpar season by Mahomes — at least by his standards — prevented the Chiefs from claiming an eighth straight AFC West title, the second-longest streak in NFL history trailing only the Patriot's 11-year run atop the AFC East.
They'll face a familiar foe with former Chiefs star WR Tyreek Hill leading an explosive Dolphins offense. Miami had a chance to earn the AFC's No. 2 seed but lost at home to the Bills in Week 18 to slip down to No. 6.
The Chiefs beat the Dolphins 21-14 back in Week 9 in Germany. The Chiefs led that game 21-0 and looked to be on the verge of blowing out Miami before the Dolphins stormed back to make it a game. Kansas City held Hill to eight catches and 62 yards, far below his season average of 114.5 yards per game.
Here's what you need to know about the wild-card clash between the Chiefs and Dolphins, including broadcast information and start time.
