Chiefs quarterback moves: Chad Henne (ankle) out, Matt Moore in, report says image

Patrick Mahomes will have a new backup.

After Chad Henne, the Chiefs' former second in command, injured his ankle Saturday, the team elected to sign Matt Moore, according to ESPN, which cited unidentified league sources.

Henne suffered a high ankle sprain and an ankle fracture, according to Chiefs head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder, and will undergo surgery Tuesday.

The injury occurred when Henne was sacked Saturday night on the final play of his only series.

Kansas City went on to lose to San Francisco, 27-17.

The Chiefs will now prepare for the last preseason game and the start of the regular season with another veteran presence behind Mahomes.

Moore spent seven seasons with the Dolphins as their backup and was the team’s starter in 2011. He also spent four years with the Panthers.

The Chiefs brought in Moore and Henne two years ago when they were evaluating veteran backup quarterback options, according to the Kansas City Star, which cited unidentified sources.

Moore eventually stepped away and Henne was signed. Because of his familiarity with Kansas City, when the need arose again this weekend, Moore was the team's first call, The Star noted.

The Chiefs enter Week 4 of the preseason with rookie Kyle Shurmur and Chase Litton, who is going into his second NFL season, as options under center.

Both likely will see substantial time in the Chiefs' final preseason game Thursday against the Packers as they play for a roster spot behind Mahomes and Moore.
