Chiefs CEO and Chairman Clark Hunt broke his silence Saturday on the saga surrounding Tyreek Hill, saying the team will make the "right decision ... at the right time."
Hunt echoed the team's statement on the controversial audio recording of the wide receiver, adding that he was deeply disturbed by what he heard and reiterated that Hill isn't with the team.
When asked if the team's due diligence has changed with Hill’s most recent trouble, Hunt admitted that type of behavior can be hard to predict.
"I think on every player you bring into the organization there’s some element of risk," Hunt said, via the Kansas City Star.
"Could be his playing ability, could be things that distract him off the field as well as trouble they get into. That’s a risk you take. It’s something that as a franchise we have to be willing to own when it doesn’t go the right way. That’s something I believe in and something I know (general manager Brett Veach) believes in as well."
The Chiefs released running back Kareem Hunt in November immediately after video that appeared to show him shoving a woman emerged, though Hunt explained the two situations are different.
"That goes back to the ongoing investigation with Tyreek and really our ability to get any information," Hunt said. "That audio was really among the first information we had received on the investigation."
Just one day after prosecutors announced Hill would not face charges of child abuse, Kansas City CBS affiliate KCTV5 on Thursday revealed its investigative department was sent what is purported to be a recording of the NFL player and his fiancee, Crystal Espinal, discussing the police investigation and what they were telling authorities.
The Chiefs, who say they only learned of the clip's existence at the same time the public did, suspended Hill early Friday morning.
It was confirmed in March that Hill was being investigated by Overland Park, Kansas, police over two separate alleged incidents involving his son. Reports later added the boy was alleged to have suffered a broken arm in one of the incidents.
The couple temporarily lost custody of the child last week while the case was ongoing, and it has since been re-opened with the audio release.
