The Chiefs' quest for a three-peat begins in the 2024 NFL draft.
Kansas City won each of the past two Super Bowls behind the majesty of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but there are still some issues the team needs to resolve before Week 1. This past season proved the defense is up to snuff with the best in the league. The Chiefs shut down four top-tier offenses on their path to the Lombardi Trophy in the Dolphins, Bills, Ravens and 49ers.
The offense still needs work, though. Mahomes is amazing and tight end Travis Kelce is a future Hall-of-Famer, but there are serious questions at other positions like offensive line and wide receiver. The Sporting News' Vinnie Iyer looked to solve the Chiefs' roster rows in his most recent mock draft which features a lot of early offensive selections:
Round 1 Pick No. 32: Kingsley Suamataia, OT, BYU
Suamataia would fill the hole vacated on the left side of the offense line by Donovan Smith in free agency and give the Chiefs a long-term solution for the position. This is Kansas City's No. 1 need this offseason, so taking a tackle with its first pick makes sense.
Round 2 Pick No. 64: Jonathon Brooks, RB, Texas
Brooks would be a long-term play for Kansas City. He's still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in November, but he rushed for 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns in 10 games before the injury. The Chiefs could ease him back into football shape before releasing him behind Isiah Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire at the end of his rookie season.
Round 3 Pick No. 95: Brenden Rice, WR, USC
Rice has football genes, being that he's son of the Hall-of-Famer wideout Jerry Rice, but isn't as polished of a player as others in this class. He would do well to come into a situation with a great quarterback and coach and be able to slowly ease himself into the NFL world as a fourth or fifth option for Mahomes in his first season.
Round 4, Pick No. 131: Elijah Jones, CB, Boston College
The Chiefs need cornerback depth after trading away L'Jarius Sneed. Kansas City's immediate replacements are solid options to take over for Sneed, but adding more depth behind the unit will be crucial if some of them fail in 2024.
Round 5, Pick No. 159: Justin Eboigbe, DT, Alabama
Similar to cornerback, the Chiefs can always use more young defensive linemen. Chris Jones isn't getting any younger, and adding in players who don't need to be Day 1 starters is great for the learning curve on the defensive line.
Round 5, Pick No. 173: M.J. Devonshire, CB, Pittsburgh
Devonshire has tallied seven interceptions in the past two years. That type of production is pretty uncommon this late in the draft, meaning the Chiefs could add a quality depth player for their secondary.
Round 7, Pick No. 221: Charles Turner III, C, LSU
Creed Humphrey's starting role is not in doubt, but the Chiefs need to think about the future of the position if he becomes too expensive. Turner has two years of experience at the position in a high-tempo offense. He's quality depth for KC.
