On Monday, Panthers coach Ron Rivera stood up for the reigning league MVP.
“I support him 100 percent in this,” he said (via The Charlotte Observer). “He’s a bigger guy for that position, as opposed to some of the smaller quarterbacks of stature. When they get hit, they roll around to the ground. When he gets it, he absorbs them and it doesn’t look as bad.”

Rivera reportedly expressed his displeasure directly to Goodell over the phone Monday.
This is the third time so far this season Newton has been in the center of player-safety issues. He took several hard hits from the Broncos defense in Week 1 and suffered a concussion in Week 4 against the Falcons.
