Cam Newton offers Instagram reaction to his release from Patriots image

Hours after being released by the Patriots, Cam Newton penned a positive response on his Instagram. 

“I really appreciate all the love and support during this time but I must say…please don’t feel sorry for me,” Newton posted via a story in his trademark social media font, before adding “#ImGood.”

The official news of Newton’s release comes just days after he posted a photo montage that included the phrase “QB1” with an arrow pointing toward the number on his jersey.

Newton missed five days last week claiming to have misunderstood the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols, and allowed rookie quarterback Mac Jones to enter the spotlight. During the Patriots’ joint practice with the Giants on Wednesday, Jones showed his confidence on the field. 

In the first of two practices outside Gillette Stadium, Jones completed 12 of 14 passes in 7-on-7 drills (85.7 percent) and 22 of 26 in full-team 11-on-11s (84 percent) while ceding just four competitive reps to third-stringer Brian Hoyer. 

After only completing two of five passes for 10 yards and throwing an interception during the Patriots’ 22-20 win over the Giants, Newton’s performance couldn’t compare to Jones. According to Pro Football Focus, Jones earned 92.2 rating through three preseason games while Newton was just 79.6.

Now a free-agent, Newton’s future in the league is uncertain. The Cowboys expressed some interest after his release, according to NFL reporter Josina Anderson. There may be interest among teams such as Washington, Texans and the Broncos, but the former MVP may have trouble securing a starting QB job.
