The Detroit Lions deciding to match the offer tight end Brock Wright received from the San Francisco 49ers was met with mixed reactions, but as it turns out, the deal isn't bad at all.
The Lions initially extended a restricted free-agent tender to their tight end that was for one year and $2.985 million before ultimately matching the three-year, $12 million deal the Niners offered him.
According to Over the Cap, Wright is getting $4.6 million fully guaranteed over the course of the three-year deal that has three void years attached to it in order to spread out the bonuses on the salary cap into future years.
Wright will account for a cap hit of $1.764 million in 2024, and then $2.62 million in 2025 and $4.85 million in 2026. Obviously, those first two cap hits are both lower than the initial tender figure.
If the Lions decide to cut him in 2026, it would cost $2.12 million in dead cap while garnering a savings of $2.72 million. A post-June 1 cut that year would only cost $709,000 and save $4.14 million.
Considering the initial tender and what the new contract ended up being, the Lions made the right move in matching the Niners' offer that will keep Wright in Detroit.
