Chiefs outside linebackers coach Britt Reid will not travel with the team to Tampa, Fla., for Super Bowl 55 after being involved in a multivehicle crash Thursday night that left a 5-year-old girl with life-threatening injuries, ESPN and NFL.com reported Friday.
Police in Kansas City, Mo., say Reid, the son of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, drove his Ram pickup truck into a Chevrolet Impala and a Chevrolet Traverse that were stopped on an interstate highway entrance ramp just south of the team's complex (per Kansas City television station KSHB). The Impala had run out of gas and its occupants called relatives for assistance. The relatives pulled up in the Traverse.
The injured girl was sitting in the back seat of the Traverse. A 4-year-old seated with her suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to Kansas City police. Reid suffered minor injuries, police said. No one else was reported injured.
Police are investigating whether Reid was driving while impaired. No charges had been filed as of Friday night. Per the KSHB report, Kansas City police said in an application for a search warrant that Reid told them he had consumed two or three alcoholic drinks. The officers claimed they smelled "a moderate odor of alcoholic beverages" and that Reid's eyes were bloodshot and red. They also claimed that Reid told them he was the driver of the Ram truck.
Police drew blood from Reid at a local hospital after a Jackson County judge approved a request by officers.
The Chiefs said in a statement Friday that they were aware of the crash and were gathering information.
Reid, 35, has been on his father's staff in Kansas City since 2013.
Six years earlier, the younger Reid pleaded guilty to drug, assault and weapons charges in Pennsylvania stemming from a road rage incident in which Reid flashed a gun at another motorist. The judge in the case sentenced Reid to between eight and 23 months in prison and five years' probation.
Reid was arrested again in August 2007, this time on DUI and drug charges. He pleaded guilty in that case in February 2008 and was sentenced to one to six months in jail. He received credit for time served and was released on parole less than a week later, KSHB reported.
