Brandon Weeden was released by the Cowboys on Tuesday, the team announced.
The move was to make room on the roster for Tony Romo, the team's starting quarterback who has been sidelined the last eight weeks after suffering a broken collarbone. Now, Romo is off injured reserve and ready to win out.

Weeden, a first-round pick by the Browns in 2012, started three games for Dallas this season, losing all of them. He eventually was replaced by Matt Cassel, who has started four games, losing all of them. Cassel will remain on the roster in a backup role.
So what's next for Weeden? The 32-year-old quarterback becomes a free agent after an unimpressive stint with Dallas over the last two seasons. He might get another shot as a backup, but things aren't looking great.
As for the Cowboys, the fact they released Weeden proves Romo is healthy enough to compete. He'll now take over a 2-7 Dallas team and try and right the ship. The postseason prognosis doesn't look good, but the Cowboys haven't given up yet.
