Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams went on the Rich Eisen Show recently to discuss following up on his highly productive 2023 campaign. One of the more intriguing lines that Williams brought up was in relation to the addition of Blake Corum to the Rams' backfield. Williams mentioned the two were at the top of the depth chart (to no surprise) but how he said the two can build off of each other is an interesting note.
"I’m super excited that we went to go draft Blake Corum, somebody who can run the ball very well and hopefully it allows me to get to the slot or allows me to just run routes out of the backfield so that I’m able to really showcase my skills that I have for this game."
Lining Williams up in the slot isn't something the Rams have done all that often. Last year, Williams saw just 21 snaps out of the slot. Williams did catch 32 passes last season, but did finish tied for the third-most drops of all RBs with five. Him improving as a receiver would give Williams a true three-down skill set.
It does sound like both Williams and Corum are working on improving their receiving skills. In an interview on the Rich Eisen show earlier this month, Corum also mentioned he was expecting to catch more with the Rams than he did at Michigan.
With how multiple the Rams' offense has become, Williams and Corum being interchangeable and versatile on the field will only help the Rams become that much more potent. Sean McVay's bread and butter is disguising concepts and layering them together. Having these two on the field as capable players who can align anywhere and catch or run the ball only grows opposing defenders headaches.
